This is a beautiful little velvet covered trinket box, with silver top. I have not seen one quite like this before. Often they are morocco, with the silver top, and very often, the morocco gets split. Normally, the top just sits on top, too, and is not hinged as this one is, with material This box is beautifully constructed. In the photo the top, when open , is not straight, but it does sit straight on the box; it's hinged with the same fabric which covers the bottom of the box. The hallmarks are present on the top, and declare that it is British Sterling, minted in Birmingham in 1908, by the maker G & C Ltd. The box measures 4 and 1/2 inches East to West, and 2 inches North to South.
