This is a wonderful, circa 1850 piece. It is a 15K gold (tested, but unmarked) locket with wonderful hairwork inside. The hairwork is formed into a tree with various branches of different colored hair. I think this is probably a sentimental piece, rather than a mourning locket. Anyway, the locket comes in its original red morocco box, and also, amazingly, there is also a painted miniature on board of the locket's hairwork., This is colored, and the same size as the locket, and it names the 8 family member, including Mother, Father, and 6 siblings, and shows, by number, which branch of the tree belongs to which family member. On the bath of the card, someone has written the family name, and it appears to be something like "Munch" family. I have never before had a piece like this, with such provenance. The locket is in pristine condition, and measures a little over 1 inch and 1/4 in diameter. This is surely a special piece.
