I normally don't buy compacts, because I usually buy things earlier than that. I don't think, though, I have ever before seen a compact from 1917 with a powder puff. That's what we have here; a beautiful little silver compact with mirror, complete with the original powder puff. The hallmarks are clear and present, and declare this piece to be British Sterling, minted in Birmingham, in the year 1917, by the maker, "HWL." The compact is in excellent condition, with no dents or dings, and the clasp fits very tightly, Also, there is a bale attached, so that this could be hung from a chatelaine, or neck chain. This piece measures 1 and 1/2 inches North to South, not counting bale, and 1 and 3/4 inches East to West.
