I have been buying, selling, and collecting memorial jewelry for over 20 years, and I have never seen a piece like this one. I have had the ball lockets with photos inside, but never one with a memorial inscription and some strands of hair. The sides of this ball are 14 k, unmarked but tested, and the writing has been painted on the inside of the ball. It reads "Mary Gwndeline, 9th September, 1865. There are a few strands of blond hair inside. While listing this, it suddenly occurred to me that this might be a Sentimental piece. It doesn't say "ob." It could be the hair , name, and birthdate of a baby. Who knows? At any rate, it is a unique piece. and it weighs 6.06 grams. NOTE; a kind Ruby Lane viewer has just sent me the following information about this piece:
There is only one Mary Gwendeline (note the spelling!) born on this date, she is Mary Gwendeline PETRE, daughter of Edward Henry PETRE and Gwendoline Elizabeth TALBOT. The Petre family tree is on the Family Search website and goes back to the 1500s.
