This is a beautiful, circa 1850 hair jewelry set, which was purchased in Paris. It is fashioned from unmarked, but tested, 18 ct gold. These hair work pieces are not always memorial; sometimes they are sentimental, but I think it most likely that this set is memorial because of the black enamel band around the pieces. What makes this set so unique are the earrings. I have seen several sets of hair work earrings, but only one set, on the ears of a customer, have I ever seen under glass, like this one. The hair work in each piece is amazing, featuring the Prince of Wales plume. The brooch is worked in lovely blonde hair. The earrings use the same pattern of the Prince of Wales plume, but the hair in the earrings is dark, but with blonde flowers. This could be the hair of someone's Mother and Father, beautifully worked into a matching set. This is the only set like this one I have ever seen. The earrings have the original French clip backs. All three pieces of the set weigh 24.96 grams. The brooch measures 1 and 3/4 inches North to South, and 1 and 1/2 inches East to West. The brooch has the original "c" clasp and "t" hinge. The earrings measure 1 and 1/8 inch North to South, and 3/4 of an inch wide. This is a wonderful, unique set. The earrings alone are probably worth the asking price.
