Intaglio engraving, the technique used to create these rings, is believed to have originated around 5000 BC in Mesopotamia. Around 600 BC, Greco-Roman artists developed new techniques for intaglio carving.
Intaglio rings have a long history. They date back to ancient civilizations and continue through various periods. They're particularly associated with ancient Rome, but also appear in the Medieval period; the Renaissance (due to discoveries of artifacts piquing interest in ancient cultures); and the 18th and 19th centuries. They remain popular, and a symbol of heritage.
I bought this believing it was stone and sterling. The truth: acid testing reveals 800 silver; gem-testing proves glass. Nonetheless, the ring is definitely antique and still beautiful in its way.
The depiction is of a Roman soldier. Carving is sharp and clear, no chips. Unlike most Centurion intaglios, this one is remarkably detailed and portrait-like, rather than a swiftly produced trinket. (Any spots are dust motes and will blow off.) The glass is a handsome deep brown.
Ring is sized for a pinky at 5.5.
