This beautifully patinated figure of Christ appears to be from a very early time period. The patina, along with the style of carving, lead us to believe that this figure is at least Gothic period, from about the 15th century or earlier and could date as early as Medieval times. The figure is carved with unusual styling of the hair that has something Middle Eastern about it, almost like the adornments on Egyptian deities and political figures. The corpus is mounted on a velvet backing in a more modern, early 20th century Gilt Florentine frame.
The overall piece measures 8 7/8 Inches (22.7 cm) tall and 4 1/4 Inches (10.8 cm) wide.
The corpus alone measures 4 1/4 Inches (10.9 cm) tall and 1 1/8 Inches (3.0 cm) wide.
