I present to you a fabulous, One of a kind artist made Folk Doll in the likeness of Aunt Betsey Trotwood from "David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens. Although she is categorized as a "doll", I will also refer to her as an "art piece", which she is.

Aunt Betsey came to me in a pair with another doll made for a different book, by the same doll artist. I have provided a photo of both dolls together to try to establish some sort of history for you. "David Copperfield" Was written in 1850 and I can only deduce that both dolls were likely made a little more than a decade later.

It is hard to distinguish all of the materials from which Betsey has been made. It is possible that her head is made of papier mache. Her features are molded and her expression appears to be painted. She is wearing a scowl, quite indicative of the Aunt Betsey Dickens portrays in his novel. She has black spots on her face that may or may not be due to age. She is wearing a wig made of tightly braided (what appears to be) wool yarn hair that is affixed to her head. Remnants of an eyelet lace hat or bonnet is affixed to her wig. Her arms are stuffed with cotton and her legs appear to be wood. Her midsection may be stuffed with straw. Her shoes are carved wood with a kid leather accent "buckle". Her clothing is in wonderful condition for her age, and you can also see that her linen skirt and jacket were once purple.

Height: 14.5"
Width: 5" at the hip area

Condition: This doll shows signs of wear consistent with age. Her head tends to keep to one side. She is Fragile! As with many pieces this age, caution must be taken when setting her up for display. She does display wonderfully and will stop anyone in their tracks to get a closer look.
