Antique Austro-Hungarian Brooch Dainty Renaissance Revival Enamel Crystal Filigree Lace Pin

This is an exquisite little Renaissance Revival lace pin dating from the 1890s, made of delicate brass filigree decorated with amethyst, emerald and citrine paste crystals, blue and white enamel and Czech art glass cabochons. It is an early creation of Czech and Bohemian jewellery artisans, living at the time under the Austro-Hungarian Empire (later in Czechoslovakia). Though the brooch is made with inexpensive materials, such as brass and crystal glass, the quality and artistry of the workmanship is exceptional. The brooch measures 1.5 x 1 inches, fastens with a secure C clasp and straight pin, and is miraculously well preserved, free of any significant signs of damage or wear - truly unusual given it is over 100 years old.

Renaissance Revival jewellery became popular in the late 1800s, and many pieces, like this one, were manufactured in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, especially in the area around the city of Gablonz (later Czechoslovakia) which had been the home of established art glass and jewellery traditions since the 1700s and earlier. Later, this jewellery-making tradition was made famous by the work of the Neiger Brothers, Max and Norbert, but this little brooch pre-dates them by a few decades.
