This is a rare Italian Renaissance Revival locket decorated with graceful high relief images of dancing Venus and Cupid and dating from the Victorian period - probably brought back to England by an aristocratic youth as a memento of Grand Tour travels to Italy. The figure of Venus is holding a cup, symbolic of her feminine powers of seduction, whilst Eros is waving a thrysus wand, bringer of prosperity, fertility and hedonism. Unusually, the locket's shape and size are reminiscent of a Catholic reliquary - a Love Reliquary!
The interior is roomy, divided into two compartments separated by a glass door, allowing one to secret a small token of the beloved, such as a lock of hair - as well as the beloved's picture. The exterior has two clasps side by side, allowing one to open the locket with the divider covering either the left or the right compartment.
The material is silver plated Pinchbeck alloy, with a glorious golden glow peeking from under the silver plating to emphasize the classical beauty of the goddess and her son. The locket has a hand crafted look, with visible marks of tools and a solid, cast metal lid - this is a weighty, well made piece. It measures an impressive 1.55 x 1.25 inches (4 x 3.2 cm) not including the bale, and the compartments are 2 mm and 3 mm deep.
The locket comes with a graceful 30 inch barleycorn chain which complements it beautifully.
