Antique Victorian Sunflower Locket c1870s Egyptian Revival Rose Gold Filled w Yellow Gold Detailing

Here is a gorgeous Victorian sunflower locket to brighten up the dark winter months. This charming mid-Victorian (c 1860s-70s) locket is shaped like a sunflower, with deep repousse ‘seed’ centre surrounded by a border of petals finely traced in yellow gold detailing over the raised areas of the rose gold filled case. The locket is bright throughout, with that lovely gold/rose gold contrast well preserved – it is quite subtle, but clearly visible under magnification, and it adds depth to the ornamentation.

The sunflower’s stylised petals are also reminiscent of a lotus flower, giving the locket an Egyptian Revival look. At the time this locket was made, the exotic decorative motifs of Ancient Egypt were popular with people who had undertaken their Grand Tour - a coming of age rite for young aristocrats – travelling through Europe and Egypt to become acquainted with the world at large.

The locket comes complete with the original picture bezels and a faded sepia photograph of a Victorian gentleman under the original glass. With age, the picture surface has developed a fingerprint – probably belonging to the original owner. The other side of the locket is lined in dark blue velvet, and we have added a clear acrylic protective cover, under the original bezel.

The locket measures 1 x 0.8 inches not including the bale and is 6 mm deep on the outside (about 4mm deep inside). It comes with a gilt double link Victorian rolo chain which measures 18 inches in length and fastens with a secure spring ring clasp. The chain is generally well preserved, apart from a testing area at the back, which appears less bright.
