This is a charming Victorian long muff guard chain paired with an etched Maltese cross fob made of Birmingham sterling silver hallmarked for the year 1892.

The guard chain, originally used to secure a muff or lorgnette, is 58 inches long, and can be wound around the neck three times, and fastens with an Albert fob inscribed NCRCO. It is made of segments of belcher chain interspersed with glass pearls and spindly etched segments - a popular Victorian design inspired by Murrle Bennett. It is made of silver tone alloy, with the loop inscribed Metal, and accented with silver glass pearls, which were made by filling glass spheres with a lustrous silvery lacquer made from fish scales (a technique invented in the 18th century by a Frenchman named Jacquin). If you look closely, a small section of lacquer has come away inside the glass casing of one of the pearls, revealing the secrets of its manufacture. Glass pearls such as these have survived the test of time wonderfully well and are now highly collectible in their own right.

The fob is hallmarked sterling silver (the lion en passant), Birmingham (anchor), the year letter for 1892 and the maker's initials, J.A. (probably James Alexander). It is hand engraved with ornate lush scrollwork around a star with a blank cartouche at the centre, which can be engraved with the wearer's initials.
