This is a well made and preserved Edwardian silver brooch in the style of the Aesthetic Movement. The openwork rosette consists of floral scrollwork with fine detailing, and is slightly domed. It measures 1.25 in across and fastens with a secure trumpet clasp and straight pin. The brooch tests as sterling silver but has no hallmark. In excellent condition, ready to wear. Charmingly crafted!
Britain's Aesthetic Movement (1860 – 1900) aimed to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Industrial Age by focusing on producing 'art for art's sake'. It promoted a 'cult of beauty' that revolutionized the decorative arts, aiming to pervade the world of the middle classes with beautiful objects made for everyday use. This included finely crafted silver decorated with symbolic plants and animals. The brooch offered here seems to be an Edwardian take on the late Victorian aesthetic style, with a well crafted abstract floral design and Edwardian style hinge.
