This superb Oak Desk Letter Box is a special find!
The top of the letter or stationary box is trimmed on each end with elegant brass decoration. In the center is an engraved brass shield "Presented to Capt. T. E. Gentles by the Boys of "D" Squad R.A.F. Cranwell as a mark of esteem on his leaving the Squadron 21-6-19".
The R.A.F. College at Cranwell, Lincolnshire, England was the training establishment for all those who wish to become permanent officers in the R.A.F. A two year military training course for the British Air Force. The military aviation at Cranwell started in 1915. Research showed Capt. T.E. Gentles was there Jan1, 1919 to Dec. 3 1919.
The Letter Box is made of oak wood. The bottom has an attractive carved design on all four sides. The measurements are 12" long, 9" wide, by 8" tall. The Box has double crystal inkwells and a rear top opening stationary holder lined in wine colored velvet. The 8" tall Letter Box is trimmed in brass on the top and bottom. The lid hinges work well. Two thick cut glass inkwells fit into recessed spaces with brass accent holders. There is an un-engraved brass shield between the inkwells. Behind the crystal bottles mounted into the wood are two metal brass pen holders. No pen.
This item is in very good condition. At some time, the underneath bottom has been reinforced by metal brackets and one side re-glued (see pictures). To be expected, the brass shows wear. The two cut crystal inkwells have a couple rough spots on the bottom corners, but no noticeable chips. The brass tops are worn, but the hinges are in good working condition. This is really a show piece with history!
