This is a lovely Earthenware "1884" Doulton Transferware Platter and Tureen. The impressed symbol mark on the back of the platter is an old one dating this set to 1884. Doulton and Co. was formed in 1878 and later became "Royal Doulton". The Platter measures 15 1/2" x 11 1/4"" and the Tureen measures 13"( including handles) by 8. The dish is 7" tall to the top of the handle. The color of the Set is reddish brown on cream. The Set has a very busy pattern with a large border between two smaller borders. Then a delightful whimsical central scene of a seascape. There is a swimming fish in the water looking upward to two dragonflies. The scene also has a tall sea-weed and a water lily. The outside border is floral. The larger border has three fanning peacocks among flowers with lots of scrolls. The smaller inner border is a geometric design leading into the well of the platter. For the age, condition is wonderful. Nice shiney glaze with no crazing. No chips or cracks on the Platter or Tureen. This is about as good as it gets for transferware of this age. This Set would make a wonderful display item on buffet or dinning table. What a wonderful scene for a lake house!
