Dartmouth Devon Torquay Pottery is synonymous with holiday souvenirs with motto ware decoration on items. Torquay is the generic name for the slip decorated red ware pottery from South Devon in England. The design on this Creamer and Sugar is sometimes called Cottage Ware. A scene of hand painted cottages between trees on a cream background. Other colors are green, tan, and blue. Both pieces have the Motto "Go aisy wi it now". Inscribed on one side under the cottage design is "Lynton and Lynmouth". the Sugar has the Dartmouth Devon printed black mark on the bottom. The Creamer has a mark with words too blurred to read. This printed mark was used by Dartmouth circa 1947. The Sugar is 2" tall x 4" wide. The Creamer is 3" tall x 3 1/2" wide ( including handle) .
Motto Ware with its quaint inscribed Victorian rules to live by is highly collectible today. The condition of these two pieces is wonderful. No chips or cracks.
