This beautiful hot air balloon depicted on an early Bilston & Battersea large enamel box by Halcyon Days was produced in the 1970s. The oval Bilston & Battersea Halcyon Days mark is on the underside. The lid is hand painted with a hot air balloon flight while the interior of the lid states: "Mr. Sadler and Capt. Paget, RN (British Royal Navy) ascending from the gardens of the Mermaid Tavern at Hackney on August 12th, 1811." James Sadler started out adult life as a lowly pastry chef. Although uneducated and illiterate, he became the first Englishman to achieve flight and was a pioneer laying the groundwork for future aeronautical developments.
This gorgeous enamel over copper box is in excellent condition and comes in its original lined turquoise presentation box. The presentation box has a smudge on the top and back side from where stickers were previously adhered. The enamel box measures about 2" in diameter at the base and stands about 1.25" high.
