This gorgeous old biscuit barrel or biscuit jar was made in England by W. (William) Wood & Company. W. Wood & Company was part of the Albert Street Works in Burslem, England. Their crown and Staffordshire Knot mark is found on the bottom of the barrel, and dates the piece from 1915-1932. The company itself was operating from 1869 to 1932.

The metal works on the piece was made by John Nodder & Sons of Sheffield, England, Their mark, Nodder Sheffield, can be found on the underside of the lid. The metal appears to have been silver plated at one time but has worn off leaving a lovely patina. The lid and bezel is very ornate with raised flowers around the bezel and a radiating raised spoke pattern on the lid surrounded by etched leaves.

The colors on the jar are so beautiful. There is a cobalt blue ring around the base and rim, followed by a thin gold colored line of beads, then a raised pattern of vertical lines, followed by a beautiful raised pattern that looks like draped tassels. The floral design is done in the most beautiful colors of magenta, teal, yellow, brown, and purple. I am not sure if it is hand painted or a decal. I don't see the tiny dots or edges often found in decals, nor can one feel brush strokes.

The biscuit barrel is in excellent condition for its age. There is light overall crazing, but no chips or cracks. The barrel measures 5.5" tall to the rim, and about 9" tall with the handle upright. The fullest part of the body measures about 5.5" in diameter.

This would be a gorgeous piece to add to your collection or just showcase on its own.
