This hand painted redware sugar bowl was produced by the Relco company of Japan c 1940s-1950s. It has a high gloss black finish over red clay. The hand painted fruit motif features an apple, grapes and cherries with gold details. The handle is made of wire and can be removed. The sugar bowl sits on three pedestal feet.
It is in very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks. There are a few pinprick spots were the glaze didn't cover, and a couple of very small areas of paint loss. The shiny gloss has a mottled appearance under bright light. The sugar bowl measures 4.75" in diameter at the fullest part of the body, and stands 6" tall with the handle upright. The Relco Hand Decorated Japan sticker is still affixed to the bottom. The bottom is embossed Hand Painted 9A257.
