This French Dressing was one in a series of salad dressing jars with flat head pixie stoppers produced by the Holt Howard (also known as Holt-Howard) ceramic company in the 1950's-1968. This jar has the Holt-Howard mark with the copyright symbol and date of 1959. The jar is in very good used vintage condition. The colors are bright and the script is all there. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is light overall crazing and very slight browning from age and use. The jar is missing the flat head pixie stopper. It stands about 4.25" tall. The base is about 2.75" in diameter.
This was originally sold as a set along with an Italian dressing and a Russian dressing. Each flat head stopper wore different hats and had different faces commensurate with their nation. It is somewhat difficult to find the pieces with undamaged stoppers as the delicate necks often snapped with repeated use.
The complete set is shown in Walter Dworkin's "Price Guide to Holt-Howard Collectibles and Related Ceramicwares of the '50s and '60s" on page 40. Holt-Howard ceramics have enjoyed great popularity through the ages and are highly collectible today.
Although this ad is only for the jar, from time to time the flat head pixie stoppers become available on the secondary market. So you can use this as a replacement piece or possibly complete it later with a newly found stopper.
