Bach was the fourth (or fifth, issued at same time as Handel) enamel box produced for the Classical Composer series by Halcyon Days. This limited edition box was issued in 1972 with an edition size of 1000, and was especially made for sale by Cartier of New York. The Haydn box was one of five classical composer boxes issued in this series.
This beautiful little enamel box is in excellent condition. The box measures about 2.25" in diameter. The brass bezel has aged to a nice patina, and the colors of the box are bright. The underside bears the early BB oval mark stating Bilston and Battersea Enamels Made in England along with Cartier New York and the hand signed No. 832. This BB mark was only used from 1970-1973. The interior lid inscription states "Leipzig Cantor at St. Thomas's School from 1723 until his death, the Leipzig pears saw Bach at the zenith of his powers." On the interior bottom it states Johann Sebastian Bach 1685-1750. According to The First 25 Years of Halcyon Days Enamels by Susan Benjamin on p76, the image depicted on the lid was based on a bust by Carl Seffner dated 1897 which was housed in the Paris Opera House. No box available.
This would be a beautiful gift for any lover of classical music. Collect all five, as I will be listing them soon.
