Haydn was the third enamel box produced for the Classical Composer series by Halcyon Days. This limited edition box was issued in 1971 with an edition size of 1000, and was especially made for sale by Cartier of New York. The Haydn box was the third of five classical composer boxes issued in this series.
This beautiful little enamel box is in excellent condition. The box measures about 2.75" long, just over 1" tall, and 2.25" wide. The brass bezel has aged to a nice patina, and the colors of the box are bright. The underside bears the early BB oval mark stating Bilston and Battersea Enamels Made in England along with Cartier New York and the hand signed No. 832. This BB mark was only used from 1970-1973. The interior inscription states Joseph Haydn 1732-1809 Prolific composer justly called "The Father of the Symphony." The lid depicts "Haydn, set against a background view of the park at the Esterhazy Palace in Hungary where he was Court Musician" according to The First 25 Years of Halcyon Days Enamels by Susan Benjamin on p76. No box available.
This would be a beautiful gift for any lover of classical music. Collect all five, as I will be listing them soon.
