Ludwig van Beethoven was the first enamel box produced for the Classical Composer series by Halcyon Days. This limited edition box was issued in 1970 with an edition size of 1000, and was especially made for sale by Cartier of New York. The Beethoven box was the first of five classical composer boxes issued in this series.
This beautiful little enamel box is in excellent condition. The box measures about 2.5" in diameter and 1.5" tall. The brass bezel has aged to a nice patina, and the colors of the box are bright. The underside bears the early BB oval mark stating Bilston and Battersea Enamels Made in England along with Cartier New York and the hand signed No. 832. This BB mark was only used from 1970-1973. The interior inscription quotes Beethoven "Let it flow from my heart to the heart of all men," and is signed with a facsimile of his signature. The beginning musical manuscript of Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis" is depicted on the interior bottom, according to The First 25 Years of Halcyon Days Enamels by Susan Benjamin on p76. However, the manuscript looks like Beethoven's famous 5th Symphony to me. The lid depicts Ludwig van Beethoven's portrait with his name and the dates 1770-1827. No box available.
This would be a beautiful gift for any lover of classical music. Collect all five, as I will be listing them soon.
