I purchased this as a set from an antique store but I am not totally convinced they go together as the flowers are different on the two pieces.. I was told it was Sheffield. The tray looks like silver with copper in the edging and floral design in the bottom of the tray, but the underside looks more like pewter. There are no markings on the tray. It is 9.25" long and and 4.5" wide at the fullest part, and weighs 9.3 ounces.
The three legged scissor snuffer operates as a pair of scissors with the side of the box opening when the scissors are opened. When closed, It cuts the wick as it puts out the flame. That same side of the box that pops out has five hallmarks on it but they are very difficult to decipher. The only ones that are readable to me is the second from the left which is a star - it resembles the Steiff star hallmark, and the third hallmark that appears to be an Old English Y.. The snuffer measures about 7" long, and weighs 3.3 ounces. It appears to be silverplate.
The design and shape of the scissors is very similar to others I have found that are stated to be from the Georgian period.
