Here's a spectacular antique Georgian shell cameo carved in high-relief!
This lovely brooch features a highly detailed carving of a woman in profile with a crown of leaves and rose flowers. As some of the garland's foliage is grape leaves we believe she represents Bacchante, the female version of Bacchus, the Greek God of Wine and Revelry. The carving is masterfully done in the Greek Revival style.
The cameo is held in a tall bezel and framed by a gold fill rope-chain with an intricate hand-embossed pattern. The cameo carving is in excellent condition with only a shallow surface scratch near the lady's eye. The body of the brooch has several solder repairs and closes with a c-clasp that we believe is a Victorian-period replacement. We date this fine, large brooch to around 1820 and it's a fabulous example of early 1800's craftsmanship!
Size: 1.8" tall x 1.55" wide x 0.875" high
Cameo size: 1.45" tall x 1.05" wide x 0.5" high
Weight: 17.0 g
