Here is a lovely large sitting celluloid baby doll, made by Bruno Schmidt in the years 1908 to 1919, we can tell by the mark on the neck and back of the doll. You will observe, that on the neck the number given is ‘60’, where on the back the number ’55’ appears – meaning the head is slightly over-sized for the body; it was common practice to combine this way, since baby’s heads are considerable big for their bodies; so to our best knowledge this dolls head and body are originally belonging to each other since their first days, that is to say since 100 years at least.
Large antique baby measures 40 cm / 16 inches tall sitting and 60 cm 23 6/8 inches over all; she can sit perfectly on her own and holds any pose, her elastics are fine, her swivel head is perfect.
Antique baby dolls wig is made of human hair; her celluloid body has some scratches but is in admirable condition considering dolls age! There is a tiny pin hole on her belly, hardly to be noticed. Of course, the colour of her head is slightly darker than the body, she wore clothes all her life and the light caused the celluloid of her head to age differently; in the photographs you can see, that this appears very natural.
Old celluloid baby doll has very pretty large blue glass eyes, so called ‘paperweight eyes’, the sleep function is still fine, only some lid wax is missing, and her eye lashes are nearly gone. She has painted eye lashes though and very delicately painted feathered eyebrows.
Inside her open mouth sits a movable tongue and two milk glass teeth. Some colour of her upper lip is missing.
Our pretty old doll wears a beautiful dress of silky thin cotton with roses, it shows some wear on the back and may even be her original one, for sure it is as old as the doll. Her bloomers however were made by me from very thin tea dyed cotton and silk ribbon; I would no doll let go out into the world without decent underwear! For the colder days of the year antique baby doll brings her light pink coat with false fur trimming, I think it may stem from the 1950's. Her stockings and shoes are presumably from the 1960's. The satin head band was added by me.
This precious old baby doll brings her small shabby teddy bear with her; they are inseparable, and they look so very cute together.
This doll was made in Waltershausen, Thuringia, the very center of German doll production at the time! Bruno Schmidt founded his company in 1900 and it existed to 1972. Antique Bruno Schmidt celluloid doll may add wonderfully to your doll collection or makes the darling beauty for your shabby cottage style home decoration!
*Please notice: This antique baby doll does not belong in the hands of small children; she may not fulfill the safety standards for toys in our time. So celluloid baby doll is not meant as a toy, but a collector’s item for the hands of adults for display & decoration only!
