This miniature painting is the work of Olive Wesler Commons, who, along with her husband, moved from Indiana to an island on the St. Johns River in central Florida in 1908. Every window in her island home framed a magnificent view. She began sketching the rugged grace of live oak trees in a smoky drift of Spanish moss; the splendor of sunset and dawn across the water; the beauty of palms and pines and sea birds in flight. One day she painted one of these scenes on a small porcelain medallion and sent it to a friend in the north. The result was so pleasing that she made several to be mounted as jewelry for Christmas gifts. This miniature is set in a rose gold color frame and the cameo measures 3/4 inch and the pendant with the frame measures 1 inch. Absolutely gorgeous. The chain is gold filled and measures 17 inches.
