This antique French gold compass is circa 1890. It is in the form of a ship's wheel and is operational. For complete accuracy it could be magnetized. It is beautifully finished with lovely engraving on the reverse.
It makes a symbolic, unique gift to the graduate, or anyone having a change of location, as it will "always help guide them back to their home." I have personally given an antique compass as a gift and I believe it will never be forgotten.
This compass is French, purchased in Paris and retains a poincon, or gold guarantee stamp for 18 karat gold, on the attached "O" ring. It weighs 2.7 grams. It measures 7/8ths round without the additional top ring. It is charming from the front , as well as the back. Join it to a charm bracelet, or wear it on a chain. I wear one with a long chain that has a heart, and I added the compass to another link. This symbolically becomes....."follow your heart."
Either way it is worn, it is unique. Condition is excellent . The front has a tiny, tiny mark under the 1 O'clock position of the wheel. It actually may be a faint French poincon.
