This rare necklace is designed with alternating links of cut steel and Coq de Perle. The latter was made from the oval part of the pearly mollusk, the nautilus, found only in the East Indies. Its lustrous , iridescent color was a perfect foil for the mellow gray color of the cut steel. With flashes of blue and gray, it is magical when worn. The cut steel is faceted and set on a metal plate secured with rivets, a time consuming process of hand work. Each piece of steel has multiple facets to reflect light, especially beautiful in the glow of evening.
The necklace terminates with an invisible clasp mirroring the size of the central oval.
It is in excellent condition and measures 15 inches in length and drapes perfectly on the neck.
The photo of the necklace placed on a page is from the book “Georgian Jewellery" by Ginny Dawes and Corrine Davidov.
Truly a treasure from the 18th century and still so relevant to today's fashion.
