So lovely, this antique diamond and pearl butterfly is circa 1890. Ingeniously modeled, to replicate a butterfly, it has pierced wings and a thorax of pearls. The eyes are set with tiny cabochon rubies. There are 44 small, radiant rose diamonds that are approximately 70 points with F-G VS2 clarity.
The setting is 9 karat, silver topped pale rose gold. The reverse has the original screw mountings that detach when worn as a pendant.
A fold down bail slides up to attach to a chain. How versatile and clever to be able to have multiple ways of enjoying a piece of jewelry. The screw mechanism was popular in 19th century jewelry and enabled it to also be set on hair ornaments.
The diamonds are finely set and the body well detailed.
It measures 1 3/4 inches across X 1 1/8th inches down.
The chain is not included. We have chains available for sale.
Excellent condition with timeless appeal. So beautiful worn on the neckline with a sweater or shirt.
England, circa 1880
