This striking antique French, 18 karat gold ruby, diamond and rock crystal pendant is circa 1860. It has a faceted, domed rock crystal set upon with a starburst. The starburst is set with a ruby and 20 rose cut diamond accents. The use of a starburst was a very popular mid 19th century motif. However, this particular design with rock crystal and ruby is rare.
The gold work is superb and the stones finely set. The rock crystal radiates light with every movement and is so lovely against the skin.
The ruby is a mixed cushion cut measuring 5.20 x 4.42 mm and the round crystal quartz measures 23 mm.
The pendant measures 1 1/8th diameter X 1 1.5 inches long with the bail.
The condition is excellent with only minor surface wear to the back glass commensurate with age. The perimeter is enhanced with gold details that have dots of pale blue enamel. There is very minor enamel loss seen under scrutiny and not when worn.
It opens and closes securely.
It would be beautiful with a gold chain, or black ribbon/cord. The chain pictured is available separately and an excellent match.
I will include the Gemological Appraisal Laboratory evaluation of the stones.
France, circa 1860
