I love the simplicity of this early, French gold watch key. It has the design of a skeleton key with the steel tip used for winding a pocket watch. The gold work is beautiful and I especially love the restrained design of the the pierced gold.
It retains a French gold guarantee stamp of a ram. This mark dates this key to the years 1819-1838. It measures 1 3/8ths inches long X 1/2 inch across the bottom.
It weighs 2.38 grams.
It is quite a rare form and in excellent condition. So lovely worn on a simple chain as seen in the photo. The chain can be purchased separately if desired.
France, circa 1820
