This necklace is composed of 17th- 18th century crystal and glass beads. The beads originate from the Dutch trade where they were one of the first Europeans trading in the African Coasts. Known as "trade beads" they fit into a barter system for African traded goods. They became a status symbol of wealth and power in Africa.
