This ring is completely original and dates from the Roman Period, 2-3 Century AD. The setting is extraordinary, carved by hand from a solid piece of gold. It is set with an intaglio seal of Minerva wearing her crested helmet. She is the Goddess of wisdom and war.
This ring was worn by a Roman soldier, most likely as a pinky ring. It was designed as seal/intaglio, used on letters and documents.
The intaglio is carved from chalcedony, and has a rich color. It has tiny flecks of brown that are natural inclusions in the stone.
So very rare to find an ancient intaglio in its original state, as most have been reset in modern settings.
The gold is very high karat tested as over 22 karat. It has an impressive weight of 9.4 dwt.
It is a 5 3/4 US and is in excellent condition. The color of the gold is beautiful with a patina that only the passage of centuries could create.
This is a unique ring that is a joy to be able to offer for sale.
