This antique 15 karat gold locket is circa 1830. It is very rare not only in its shield shape form, but also finding the original working padlock and key intact. The shield locket has its original, beveled two sided glass. One side is hand engraved and the reverse is plain. The locket could be worn both sides as the padlock can be easily reversed. The locket opens and can house a photo or lock of hair. I love it worn as pictured.
A similar locket can be found in the British Museum housing a lock of Marie Antoinette's hair.
It measures 2 1/4 inches long X 1 1/4 inches across the locket. It is shown with a modern 14 karat gold 16 inch chain that is not included, but works well and is sold separately.
The condition is excellent.
So scarce and very beautiful.
