These magnifiers, called "Quizzing glasses" were popular in the early part of the 19th century. Worn on long ribbons or chains, they were not only a fashionable accessory but functional as well.
Most were designed in cased gold, and I rarely find examples such as this in solid 15 karat gold. The design of the gold is beautifully done, simple and elegant. The top swivels, so easy to attach to a chain or cord or ribbon. It is a magnifier although a personal lens could be replaced.
It measures 3 inches long X 1 3/8ths across.
Condition is excellent. The lease has minor scratches not visible when worn. It retains a lovely, original patina.
Completely original, functional and beautiful.
England, circa 1830
