These earrings are English, circa 1860. They are designed with sterling, hand wrought, etched butterflies imposed upon dished, rock crystal, faceted backs. The symbolism of a butterfly is wonderful, representing endurance, change, life and hope. In Christianity, it is viewed as the symbol resurrection.
The earrings glisten with every movement, as the perimeter of the crystal is faceted, capturing the light. The butterflies, wings spread as if in flight, are cleverly designed to face one another. They are securely connected with a rivet through the crystal.
The condition is excellent. The original wires have been replaced with sterling, shepherd hooks.
They measure 1 1/4 inches long from the top of the wire X 5/8ths inches across.
Easy to wear and so distinctive in design.
England, circa 1860
