This charming, petit silver locket and antique chain is French, circa 1840. It is unusual in form, a shield, and has a lovely combination of silver (800) and rose gold detailing. The rose gold finish is known as vermeil, a gold wash over silver.
The locket opens to reveal a glass, bezel set enclosure that can house a lock of hair or momento. The locket interior opens from the bottom and has its own hinge, also unique.
I believe the shield shape is symbolic of protection. It has a design on both sides of the locket. One side has a cartouche, or medallion, that can be engraved. The reverse has a raised, detailed wreath symbolic of eternity, a circle without a beginning or end. Perhaps the locket was given as a symbol of protection, and everlasting life/love.
The perimeter of the locket is accented in rose gold, contrasting beautifully with the engraved silver. The central medallion also is a pale rose gold.
The locket measures 3/4 inches long without the "O" ring and 1 1/8th with the top ring. It measures 3/4 inches across. Condition is very good with the slightest of wear in the medallion seen under close scrutiny. It retains a silver guarantee stamp on the "O" ring which is quite worn. The silver content professionally tested .
Lovely, unusual in form, and symbolic.
