This is an extraordinary French, gold citrine watch key pendant. The key rendered in the finest 18 karat gold, swivels and locks in place so it can be worn in two ways. The gold work with multi colors, fine repousse and engraving speaks for itself. It was designed at a time where artisans were valued, and time was not measured in dollars. There is a central, beautifully faceted, large citrine with glorious, saturated golden color.
It is bold at 3 3/4 inches long when the key is opened X almost 2 inches across. The large , amazing "O" ring swivels so it is easy to wear with a long chain and beautiful with a long black cord. This "O" ring is a work of art measuring 1 inch.
It retains a "tete do belier" or ram's head guarantee stamp indicating is is 18 karat gold and made in France during the years 1819-1838. Conjures up a time of opulence, of aristocratic wealth in France where only the wealthy could afford such beauty. Originally, it would have been worn on a chain to wind the finest watch, but now it is uniquely beautiful worn as a pendant.
Condition is remarkable with a beautiful, original patina. The citrine has a natural inclusion, expected in a stone of this size and not seen when worn.
France, circa 1820
