This padlock/pendant is Georgian, circa 1800. It is 15 karat gold and set with three emeralds and five rubies. It is completely original, and it is a working padlock. A top bail was added to securely lock it in place enabling this to be worn as a pendant. If a working padlock is desired, the top bail is easily removed. It is a work of art, with fine repousse, swirls, roses and a figural snake coiled so cleverly on the top. The snake, a symbol of eternity, was used symbolically signifying eternal love.
The reverse has a locket with an original glass that opens and closes securely. There are the remains of a pin mount which could always be used if needed.
The locket retains a beautiful, original patina and is in excellent condition considering it is over 218 years old. It measures 1 3/4 inches long X 1 3/8th inches across.
Rare to find and very beautiful. Wear it on a chain or ribbon for a uniquely beautiful statement. England, circa 1800
