This is a rare, antique, extraordinary double sided gold compass pendant. It is rendered in 18 karat gold and has a working compass on one side and a sardonyx intaglio on the other. It is modeled as a ship's wheel on the perimeter and swivels to reveal each side. The hard stone intaglio has a finely engraved anchor and the reverse, a compass, with an original porcelain dial and hands.
I have sold several antique compass pendants, but this is most unusual. The entire composition is symbolic, from the ship's wheel (to steer you in the right direction and always find your way home) to the hard stone image of an anchor (you are my anchor). How perfect to gift to a loved one. To paraphrase W.H.Auden "You are my North, My South. My East, My West".....
This uniquely designed and executed pendant measures 1 1/2 inches down X 1 1/8 inches across X 3/8ths depth. It weights a substantial 12.9 grams. It is 18 karat and retains a mark seen in the picture.
Easily joined with a chain or cord. I will provide a matching silver/vermeil chain. A black cord as seen with 14 karat clasp is available. Condition is excellent, and it retains a rich, original 18 karat gold patina.
I can't imagine a more meaningful and symbolic gift.
