It has been many years that I have been able to offer a long strand of antique banded agate beads. It is a beautiful necklace displaying the well matched colors of black brown and white. When the necklace is held to the light, most of the beads are translucent in the light shade of beige. This translucency is rare to find in the beads and I have only had several necklaces like this through the years. The colors range from black, dark brown, beige and white.
This necklace have been worn in England around 1860. The beads would be finished in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. Each bead has hundreds of facets, so small that they can barely be detected except by turning them slowly under a light source. These facets create the reflection of light not found on modern beads that are smoothly turned on a wheel. This was very time consuming work and required skill as well as patience. The completed product is distinctive, and it is clear why these necklaces are so precious to find and a delight to own.
The necklace measures 31 inches long, and the 47 beads graduate from 12.04mm to a large 19.76 mm. They terminate with an original banded agate push clasp. All the beads are original to the necklace and the colors well matched.
It has a modern aesthetic, which defies it 150 years. Easily worn with jeans and a tee shirt, or a crisp white shirt. Also looks wonderful with tweeds. England, circa 1860
