This antique Victorian 15 karat gold book locket is circa 1840. It is a superlative example of design and fine engraving. Of note, the engraving is on the front, back and interior. The "book" opens and has another "page" which is also engraved. When fully opened there is a crystal covering finely plaited hair . The hairs of brown and blond are protected through the ages. This is not a mourning locket, but a sentimental token of affection. The crystal can be removed, if desired, and the hair replaced with a token of choice.
It opens and closes securely with a gold engraved strap. There were many hours of labor spent on this creation, and fortunately it was loved and protected. The condition is excellent, and the patina, rich and original.
It measures 1 3/8th inches long from the top loop X 7/8 th inches across. It can be joined with a gold chain or worn, as seen in the photo , with a cord. I will provide the black cord which also has a 14 karat gold closure.
The form, engraving and condition are wonderful. It is a gift that will last many lifetimes. England, circa 1840
