Seldom seen on the market are these rare, flat cut garnet Georgian earrings. The design is simply among the most elegant I have ever offered for sale. They are set with faceted, flat cut almandine garnets that have been hand cut with faceted sides and flat tops. This cut produces more reflection of light and brilliance. When foil is placed beneath the stone, as was characteristically done in this period, it adds more depth of color and undertones. The result is a magical hue of raspberry, pink and red wine.
The earrings are 15 carat gold and retain their original front to back ear wires. They were designed as day/night earrings since the bottoms could be detached for daytime wear, if desired. There are three articulating sections, and they reflect light with each movement. The central element in the drop articulates as does the small end garnet. The earrings measure 2 inches long X 3/8 ths across the bottom sections.
The overall condition is excellent. There are several tiny edge chips seen with a loop and one garnet has been replaced at some point in their 200 year lifetime.
They are the perfect size, comfortable to wear and quite remarkable. English, Circa 1810
