This opulent, large antique French tourmaline ring is circa 1890. It has an important 17 carat faceted pink tourmaline surrounded by rose cut diamonds. The tourmaline is a beautiful, intense shade. The use of a large oval stone surrounded by diamonds is referred to as "a baque Pompadour."
The shank is hand chased in 18 karat gold. The diamonds are set in silver. The ring is very large in scale and may have been worn on top of gloves both by a man or woman. The size is an 8 3/4 US . It would be striking worn on the index or middle finger. It has been previously sized and cannot be made smaller. A jeweler could add small balls or add an interior band to make the size slightly smaller. It measures a bold 1 inch North to South and 7/8 ths inches East to West. The condition is excellent with a minor scratch on the surface of the stone . There are French guarantee stamps on the shank. It weighs 13.7 dwt.
This is a ring that has the look of grandeur. France, circa 1890
