Rare Antique Victorian Gold in Quartz Earrings
Gold bearing quartz is one of the rarest forms of natural gold. During the Gold Rush of the 1880's in the United States, most of the gold quartz stones were mined in California. It is found in only a few locations in the world. When the quart stone contains a rare matrix, of gold, a beautiful piece of jewelry can be created.
In this example the stones have many fine veins of gold , within an ivory colored quartz. The two well matched stones were most likely cut from a single source, polished, and then set in a milligrain bezel, accented with a perimeter of leaves and vines. The 14 karat gold work is beautiful, and each leaf is hand textured. The overall effect is quite subtle, as the colors of the stone and of the gold are beautifully muted . The earrings are easily worn, as they complement almost any period of jewelry.
They measure 1 3/8 inches from the top of the wire X 7/8ths across. The condition is very good with an early repair to the back C-Clasp. The beautiful patina is original, and the scale perfect for everyday wear.
United States, circa 1880
