This Scottish agate pin is circa 1860. It represents the finest elements of antique Scottish jewelry, in its condition, design and its choice of agates. The beauty of antique Scottish jewelry is in its artistry and it is unique to Scotland. Queen Victoria's passion for Scotland grew when she took over Balmoral Castle as a summer home in 1848. She had frequent visits, dressed her children in tartans, and she personally wore Scottish jewelry. What the Queen loves, so do the people and a wave of popularity of all things Scottish swept England in the mid 19th century . Many pieces were traditional, but in response to this new found enthusiasm, Victorian elements of design were used as well. The vast majority were set in silver, and those found in gold are rare and generally finer in workmanship.

This brooch is set in 9 karat gold, and is designed as a flower motif. The flower head is a mellow cairngorm from the highlands of Scotland. It was the work of a skilled lapidary who shaped each stone and set each within hand engraved mounts. The dimensions and use of perfectly soft, indigenous agates distinguish this particularly lovely design.

It measures 1 7/8ths inches round.

Timeless and unique, Scotland, circa 1860
