This beautiful example of a Maltese Cross is Georgian, circa 1820. it is designed with four sculptured, translucent, chalcedony stones set in fine contrasting 15 karat gold gold work. The chalcedony panels are centered with an emerald surrounded with natural pearls. The multi- colored gold work is so fine, it looks like it was magically spun with realistic flowers and spirals. The cross also distinguishes itself by the lovely details of tiny faceted diamonds and emeralds inset in the chalcedony.
The color of the chalcedony is a subtle, pale blue when worn on a color such as black or gray, but is white and translucent when worn on the skin. I have taken several photos to give a realistic image of the beautiful play of color and joined both with a ribbon and black cord. The reverse has a glass enclosed locket which may have housed a sentimental lock of hair. The cross measures a bold 2 1/2 inches long with the bail. The cross alone is 2 inches square. Timeless when worn on a ribbon and equally lovely on a chain, or strand of pearls. Condition is excellent.
England circa 1820
