A beautiful vintage oak seed counter or cabinet, made by The Sherer – Gillette Company of Chicago, Illinois. These were once made for use in general stores or hardware stores. It has 17 drawers on one side and 17 display windows on the other side. The glass fronts were made to display different varieties of seeds for garden planting. The drawers were used to hold bulk amounts of the seed for purchase. Each drawer has the original cast iron Sherer pull with a place for a label.
This counter would make a unique kitchen island, and the cost is much less than a custom built piece. It could also be used in a retail / restaurant setting for a checkout / cash register area. The windows can display inventory, or almost anything you can imagine, besides the obvious seeds. Old advertising, such as vintage seed packets or fruit crate labels come to mind.
At 95 inches long, the counter is just shy of 8 feet in length, making it a very usable size. It is 33 ½ inches tall and 31 inches wide. There is a recessed toe kick area along the bottom on both sides. We have restored this piece and it is ready to move in and be put to use. We have 35 + years of experience in furniture restoration, so attention to detail is important to us. Drawers easily slide in and out and they are also finished on the inside. The glass windows fit well and function properly. The display area can be made larger or smaller, depending on the size of the items you want to put in. At some point in time, one end of the top was ended out (shown in photo). Otherwise, condition is excellent.
