This doll was made in Germany c. 1880's. I don't know the exact maker, but they are generally referred to as the American Schoolboy. This sweet little guy has a bit of a different identity though. He is dressed in a boys outfit with “Bremen” embroidered on his sailor type hat. Bremen is a city in Germany, steeped in maritime traditions with a long history of sea trade. The two piece outfit seems to be made of fabric that is linen/wool. It is dark olive green and the jacket and trousers both have feather stitched accents. The long jacket has a little chest pocket, trimmed collar, a red bow at the neck and a black leather belt. His dark navy hat has Bremen hand embroidered along the brim. He doesn't have any undergarments, but does have black socks and black oil cloth shoes. I believe the clothing is original. He has molded blond hair, a closed mouth, brown glass eyes and the plump rosy cheeks and dimpled chin. The body is leather with gussets at the hips and knees but there is not enough mobility to have him sit. He has bisque lower arms. There are no visible markings on the head, but the plate may be marked in some way under the leather. Condition: The only issues that I can see on his head is what looks like a factory line on top. It has darker paint from his hair glaze, so it's always been there. There is also a speck or miniscule chip on his left glass eye. The fingers on his right hand are chipped and there is soil on the leather body. I removed the jacket but the trousers don't have any openings and I didn't want to cut the thread holding them up. The fabric is faded and has a few tiny holes and a few small spots one on the leg and two on the jacket where the fabric is lighter. The shoes look as though they've never been off. He is very charming and will steal your heart. The little dog and SFBJ friend are listed separately.
